General Settings 

Configure general discovery settings to define how devices should be identified, scanned, and added to the Assets module.
To access the general discovery settings, go to Setup > Probes & Discovery > Settings > General.
General discovery settings include the following sections:

• Configure invalid service tags
• Enable/disable MAC address identification during scan
• Computer name format
• Overdue asset scan settings
• Other settings

Configure Invalid Service Tags 

During a scan, workstations and servers are uniquely identified with their device name, service tag, and MAC address. If the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has not assigned valid service tags, multiple machines may share the same generic or placeholder value. As a result, these machines will be identified as a single device, and the scan details of one machine overwrites another.
To prevent this, you can add such service tags under Invalid service tag list. During scans, these service tags are ignored.
To add a service tag, click the plus icon , enter the service tag in the text field, and click Add. To remove a service tag, click it and click the minus icon .

Enable/Disable MAC Address-Based Identification 

Virtual machines and VPN-connected workstations may have the same MAC address because of shared virtual network adapters. If MAC address-based identification is enabled in such environments, these machines are identified as a single device, and the scan details of one machine overwrites another.
To prevent this, MAC Address Identification is disabled by default. You can enable it only if it is required in your environment.

Computer Name Format 

Select the preferred naming format for discovered workstations and servers.

• To display only the device name, choose None. 
• To display the full qualified domain name (FQDN), you can choose to append Active Directory Domain Name or DNS Domain Name to device names.

Overdue Asset Scan Settings 

Configure Overdue Asset Scan Settings to automatically delete or update state of assets that have not been scanned for a specified period. This job runs daily and performs actions based on the assets' last scan time.
To configure,

• Enable Action to perform when assets have not been scanned for the last <n> days and specify the number of days.
• Choose the product types to which the configuration must apply:
  • All Product Types: Applies to assets of all product types. 
  • Choose Select Product Types to apply to specific product types. Enable Use Advanced Criteria to define the criteria that assets of selected product types must meet.
• Choose the Action to execute: 
  •     Choose Delete Asset to delete corresponding assets automatically.
  •     Choose Move to State to update the state of corresponding assets automatically. When this option is chosen, life cycle transitions will not be applied for corresponding assets. 

Other Settings  

Clean Up Scan History: Use this option to clean up scan history automatically. Select the number of months after which scan history must be deleted.
Create custom product types during SNMP discovery: If product types are not preconfigured for SNMP devices, you can enable this option. During discovery, product types will be created automatically and the corresponding devices will be added in the Assets module under new product types.
If this option is disabled, product types will not be created and devices will not be added or synced during scans.
Create monitor details as assets for computers: When enabled, a new Monitor product type will be created automatically and monitor details of scanned computers are added as distinct assets under that product type. The monitors are also associated as components under the Relationship tab on the corresponding computer details page.
If this option is disabled, the product type will not be created, and monitor details will be recorded only in the computer details page.
