Software License Types

Software manufacturers have unique software license types, apart from several common license types. Since it is not feasible to support all these license types, ServiceDesk Plus (On Cloud) application has come up with a solution that helps you customize the license types for all software manufacturers based on the workstations and users.

Client access license (CAL)

Client access license maintains a relationship between server software and client software.

Client access license type cannot be allocated to any software installations. A user can associate the server machine & client machines with this license.

Client access license clients can be mapped to software installations or users.

For e.g. SQL server can be installed in one machine and SQL clients can be installed in 'n' number of machines to access the SQL server from it. We can maintain this mapping through client access license.

Individual

As the name implies, this license can be allocated only to a single installation.

Volume 

Multiple installations are allowed for this license type and the user can define installations allowed.

Concurrent license

This license type maintains a list of users for a license. A license is purchased for a specific number of users, and users can be mapped to the license. This license can be allocated to a single installation.

Enterprise Perpetual

This software license type does not require renewal. Unlimited software installations can be allocated with this license type.

Enterprise subscription

This license type is similar to the Enterprise Perpetual type. The expiry date will be based on the subscription.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)

Original Equipment Manufacturer software licenses are attached to the hardware. This license type cannot be transferred to another workstation.

Node Locked

The software of this license type is allocated to a single workstation.

Named user license

This license type is similar to the Concurrent license type. Only one user can be associated with these licenses.

Trial

The trial license type is a non-commercial license and is available only for evaluation purposes.

Free License

This software license type is a freeware with unlimited installations and no expiry date.

To add a software license type,

• Go to Setup >> Customization >> Asset Management >> Software License Types and click New License Type.

• On the New License Type page,

• Enter the License Type say Volume, Enterprise, Standard and so on.

  • Select the software Manufacturer from the drop-down. You can also add a new manufacturer clicking .

  • The software license can be tracked by workstations or users. So, select the corresponding option from Track By drop-down.

• Workstations: The license is allocated to the workstation.

  • Users: The license is allocated to the workstation as well as the user.

• Choose any one option from Installation Allowed drop-down, say Single, Volume, Unlimited, and OEM.
• If you have selected Workstation from Track By drop-down, the Is Node Locked option appears. This option can be enabled for a workstation with a specific configuration. Enabling Is Node Locked automatically changes the Installation Allowed field to Single.

  • If the software is freeware with unlimited installations and no expiry date, enable Is Free License check box.

  • If the software is one-time installation and does not require a renewal, enabled Is Perpetual check box.

  • If you have selected Users, the Users Allowed field appears. From this field you can select the number of users who can access the software, say Single, Volume (multiple) or Unlimited.

• Enter the License Option and click to add it to the picklist field. You can also delete License Option from the picklist field by selecting it and clicking  .

• Click Save.

To edit a software license type,

• From the Software License Types list view, click beside the License Type.

• The Software License Types page open with the values populated while adding the License Type.

• Modify the required details and Save the changes.

To delete a software license type,

• From the Software License Types page, click .

• On clicking the delete icon, a confirmation window pops up.

Click Yes.
